In Victoria, a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC) is the government’s way of ensuring your car isn’t a shopping trolley with headlights. You’ll need it to sell or transfer registration to someone else, or to re-register a vehicle; you don’t need one just to renew rego. It’s issued by a licensed vehicle tester and focuses on safety-critical bits — tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, seatbelts and structure — not a full mechanical health check. The certificate is usually valid for 30 days from the date of issue in Vic. Expect to pay roughly AUD $150–$300 for the inspection, plus whatever it takes to fix anything that fails (your wallet may also require counselling). Book with a licensed tester and bring ID, the car, and any obvious excuses; less drama, more passing.
