check a vin number nsw Page 54

To check a VIN in NSW, run a PPSR search using the VIN; it’s about $2 and shows encumbrance (finance owing), written-off status, and whether it’s reported stolen. Service NSW’s rego check is free but usually needs a number plate, so grab the plate from the seller to confirm registration and expiry. Make sure the VIN stamped on the car matches the build plate and paperwork—no creative engravings or convenient typos. PPSR won’t tell you service history or recalls, so eyeball records and look for airbag recall evidence. If anything smells dodgy, walk away—there’s always another car that won’t eat your wallet. Keep the PPSR receipt and reference number as proof of your search time.
