child booster seat age requirements Page 2

In Australia, the booster seat rules are blissfully simple, even if wrangling a wriggly six‑year‑old isn’t.

  • Under 6 months: Rearward‑facing child restraint.
  • 6 months to under 4 years: Rear- or forward‑facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness (not a booster).
  • 4 to under 7 years: Forward‑facing restraint with harness or a booster seat with a correctly adjusted seatbelt or child safety harness.
  • 7 years and over: Booster or adult seatbelt is legal, but use a booster until the belt fits properly.

For good belt fit, aim for the 5‑step test and roughly 145 cm height—because bones don’t read birthdays. Check your state’s road authority for any quirks (taxis, utes, etc.), but the national rules above are the baseline.
