In Victoria, kids under 4 years cannot sit in the front if the car has two or more rows—no ifs, no buts. Children 4 to under 7 may only ride in the front if every rear seat is already filled with kids under seven, and they must be in an approved booster using a proper lap‑sash belt (or an approved harness). In a single‑row vehicle, the right restraint is allowed up front, but never put a rear‑facing seat in front of an active airbag—because physics, and also common sense. Kids 7 and over can legally use the front seat with a seatbelt, but they’re safer in the back, where the cabin doesn’t resemble a crash‑test mosh pit.
Slide the passenger seat back as far as it goes, position the belt correctly across shoulder and hips, and if you’re unsure, check the current rules with VicRoads before you cop a fine.
