Short version: in Australia, kids under 4 years must not travel in the front seat if the car has two or more rows—no wiggle room there.
Children aged 4 to under 7 can sit up front only if all rear seats are already occupied by younger kids, and they must use the correct booster with a top-tether.
In single-cab utes or two-seaters it’s allowed with the right restraint; never place a rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag—disable it if possible and slide the seat back.
Push the seat as far rearward as practical, route belts correctly, and check your owner’s manual and state road authority because the fine print can vary.
Do it right and everyone gets home; do it wrong and the airbag can hit like a cricket bat.
