In Victoria, the rules are delightfully simple: if they’re small, they go in a proper child restraint—no exceptions, no “but it’s just around the corner.”
Up to 6 months: rear‑facing only. 6 months–under 4 years: rear‑facing or forward‑facing with a built‑in harness.
4–under 7 years: forward‑facing with harness or a booster using an adult seatbelt correctly fitted.
Kids under 7 can’t ride in the front if there’s a suitable seat in the back; only when all rear spots are taken by younger children, and they must still use the right restraint.
7 years and over: use an adult seatbelt only if it fits properly (hello, five‑step test); otherwise, keep them in a booster.
Always use approved restraints and anchorage points—comfort is optional, legality and safety aren’t.
