Short answer: in Australia, kids under 4 can’t sit in the front seat if the car has two or more rows—full stop.
From 4 to under 7, the front seat is only allowed if all rear seats are already occupied by children under 7, and they must be in an approved, properly tethered booster or forward‑facing seat.
From 7 up, they can sit up front with a correctly fitted seatbelt, but safety bodies still recommend the back seat until at least 12.
Airbags and small humans don’t mix brilliantly, so slide the seat back as far as practical and use the right restraint; when in doubt, the back seat wins.
