common problems with nissan x-trail Page 5

The Nissan X-Trail is a solid family mule, but like any SUV doing school runs and beach trips, it has a few gremlins waiting for an invitation. The headline act is the CVT: fine when pampered, grumpy when neglected. Diesel owners who only do short hops can also find out the hard way that soot and filters are not a love story. Here are the usual suspects to watch:

• CVT shudder, flare or overheating under load; regular fluid changes and software updates help, neglect gets expensive
• DPF/EGR clogging on diesels with lots of short trips; needs proper highway runs to regenerate
• MAF sensor/throttle body gunk causing rough idle or stalling; often fixed with cleaning or a sensor replacement
• Cooling system leaks (radiator/hoses) leading to creeping temps on summer climbs
• Worn suspension bushes and sway-bar links causing clunks and uneven tyre wear
• Tailgate struts and door lock actuators losing their mojo, more annoying than catastrophic

Buy on service history, insist on a long test drive to feel for CVT misbehaviour, and get a pre-purchase inspection—future you will thank present you.
