contract of sale car Page 4

Sorting a used car deal? A proper contract of sale in Australia should spell out the basics: buyer and seller full names and addresses, the car’s VIN, rego, make/model, colour, and the current odometer reading.

Note the price in AUD, any deposit paid, and whether it’s sold “as-is, where-is” with no warranty, plus the agreed handover date/time and location.

Include statements about clear title (no finance owing), a PPSR check reference, any included items (spare key, books), and record licence numbers so no one mysteriously forgets their identity.

Both parties sign and date, each keeps a copy; the seller should provide a receipt and lodge the transfer/notice of disposal with their state authority promptly.

Rules vary by state (cooling-off is usually dealer-only), so read your local transport authority’s guidance—then celebrate when the rego’s in your name and the dashboard still lights up.
