crossover vs straight through Page 14

Ah, the age-old networking cable debate: crossover versus straight through. Straight through cables are your standard issue, used for connecting different types of devices—think computer to switch or router. Meanwhile, crossover cables are the rebellious cousins, designed to directly connect similar devices, like PC to PC or switch to switch, without an intermediary.

Pros of straight through:

• Simple and ubiquitous
• Works with most network setups

• Won't connect similar devices without a switch

• Allows direct device-to-device communication

• Less common and can confuse the uninitiated

In modern networks, auto-MDIX ports have mostly rendered crossover cables obsolete, but if you're stuck with vintage gear, keep both handy. For buying cables or gear, check out Tradingpost or CarShowroom—you never know when you’ll need a networking lifeline.
