Octane is for petrol; diesel’s dance partner is the cetane number. Higher cetane means quicker ignition and smoother running, while octane measures resistance to knock in petrol engines—utterly different game. In Australia, standard diesel typically meets a minimum cetane number around the mid‑40s, with some premium fuels nudging into the 50+ range. Adding an octane booster to diesel is as useful as sunscreen on a kangaroo—don’t do it. If your diesel is clattery, smoky, or reluctant to start, think fuel quality, maintenance, or injector health, not octane.
