difference between red and green p plates wa Page 12

Ah, Western Australia’s P plates: the rite of passage for every newly minted driver and the bane of seasoned motorists. The Red P plates are for Provisional 1 (P1) drivers, the fresh-faced novices allowed on the road for their first year post-learner’s permit. These drivers face stricter rules like a lower speed limit of 90 km/h, a zero blood alcohol limit, and restrictions on carrying passengers at night.

The Green P plates denote Provisional 2 (P2) drivers, those who have survived the first year unscathed and earned a bit more freedom. Green P drivers can drive up to 100 km/h, still maintain a zero BAC, but are allowed more leniency with passengers and curfews.

In short, Red P = baby steps with more restrictions; Green P = a bit more swagger but still under the watchful eye of the law. For the nitty-gritty, check the official WA Department of Transport site or browse Tradingpost for vehicles friendly to P platers.
