Short answer: it depends on your state or territory—Australia doesn’t do one-size-fits-all for caravans.

Most jurisdictions require some form of roadworthy/safety inspection when you sell or transfer registration, or when you’re re-registering an unregistered van.

Very light trailers (often up to about 750 kg ATM) are commonly exempt, while heavier caravans typically need inspection and the right registration paperwork.

If you’ve added brakes, extra axles, or major mods, expect closer scrutiny and possibly a weighbridge visit.

Bottom line: check the exact rules with your state authority before money changes hands—cheaper than arguing at the counter.
