dog in ute laws nsw Page 684

In NSW, a dog on a ute must be safely restrained so it can’t fall, jump, or be injured—think secured crate or a properly fitted harness with a short tether to a fixed anchor.

Never tie a lead to the collar or the vehicle itself; use a harness and a swivel to avoid strangling or tangles, and cover the tray with non‑slip matting.

Provide shade and ventilation, and keep tools or loose cargo from becoming canine pinballs.

Laws against driving with an animal on your lap and animal cruelty provisions apply, so distraction and harm are both a legal (and moral) no‑go.

If travelling at highway speeds or in dodgy weather, crating in the tray or riding in the cabin is kinder and usually safer.

Check the latest NSW road rules and animal welfare guidance before you roll—compliance beats fines, and your dog will thank you by not mutinying at the next servo.
