drive to kangaroo island Page 494

You can’t drive to Kangaroo Island end‑to‑end, but you can drive to Cape Jervis (about 110 km south of Adelaide) and roll onto the vehicle ferry to Penneshaw. The crossing takes around 45 minutes, and booking ahead is wise unless you enjoy long, scenic waits featuring seagulls with attitude. Once on the island, expect mostly sealed roads with some gravel; keep an eye out for wildlife because the locals don’t always use indicators. Check biosecurity rules—no fresh fruit, honey, or muddy gear—and confirm your hire car is allowed on the ferry, as some companies are fussier than a concours judge. Do that, and your KI road trip is straightforward, spectacular, and only occasionally interrupted by views demanding an extra photo stop.
