Yes—Sydney did get a partial solar eclipse on 20 April 2023, the celestial equivalent of a bite taken out of your lamington. It wasn’t total, so no midday darkness—just a neat notch in the Sun if you had proper solar filters (your sunnies don’t count). Clouds permitting, it was a quick mid‑arvo show, blink-and-you-missed-it style. If you missed it, you’re in good company; most of us were making a cuppa.

The consolation prize? Sydney sits in the path of a total solar eclipse on 22 July 2028, which will be a proper lights-out spectacle. Mark the calendar, sort safe viewing gear, and prepare for the most dramatic afternoon tea shadow ever.
