In 2023, Australia finally discovered electrons taste better than petrol, with EVs grabbing around 7% of new-car sales and Tesla’s Model Y/3 leading the charge.
BYD Atto 3, MG4/MG ZS EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 kept things interesting, while public networks like Chargefox and Evie expanded faster than your power bill.
New EV prices ran from about AUD 40k to well north of AUD 150k, with used bargains starting in the mid-20s if you’re not fussy about range or badges.
State incentives (rebates, stamp-duty breaks) sweetened the deal, and a 7 kW home charger beat playing socket roulette on a granny lead.
In short: more choice, better range, fewer excuses—unless you’re waiting for utes, which are coming, just fashionably late.
