f1 tyre test Page 304

An F1 tyre test is basically Pirelli borrowing the teams’ very expensive toys to trial prototype rubber, then giving nothing away but lap data and headaches.

It happens at selected circuits during the season (often just after a Grand Prix), with teams running to Pirelli’s programme on blind-spec compounds—no colourful stripes, no glory runs.

Rules are tight: no development trickery, data goes to Pirelli, and any findings are shared so no-one gets a sneaky advantage.

Drivers offer feedback, engineers stare at temperature maps, and the rest of us get lap times that mean about as much as a Melbourne forecast—interesting, not definitive.
