ford ranger 2.0 bi-turbo problems Page 47

As punchy as the Ford Ranger 2.0 Bi‑Turbo is, a few gremlins do crop up—nothing apocalyptic, but enough to keep a service advisor in coffee money. Commonly reported issues include:

• DPF regeneration hassles on short‑trip driving (warning lights, limp mode if ignored).
• EGR/intake soot build‑up or cooler leaks causing rough running and smoke.
• Timing belt‑in‑oil (and oil‑pump belt) wear—stick to time/km replacement intervals.
• Turbo boost leaks or actuator faults leading to lag and power loss.
• 10‑speed auto (10R80) harsh/erratic shifting; often improved with software updates and fluid service.
• Cooling system leaks from plastic thermostat housings or hoses, plus the odd intercooler hose popping off under load.

Good fuel, regular highway stints to complete DPF regens, and on‑time servicing go a long way to keeping it sweet. For peace of mind, get a pre‑purchase inspection and check for outstanding TSBs or recalls.
