ford ranger tow bar problems Page 12

The Ford Ranger tows like a champ on paper, but a few tow‑bar gremlins do crop up—nothing a sensible inspection can’t tame.

Start by checking your VIN for any tow‑bar‑related recalls or service bulletins; various PX/PXII/PXIII and Next‑Gen models have had hardware, bolt and wiring updates.

Common issues owners report include:

• Loose or incorrectly torqued tow‑bar bolts causing movement or clunks under load.
• Cracks or deformation around the hitch receiver/bumper after heavy towing or off‑road knocks.
• Trailer wiring module faults (water ingress, poor earths) leading to dead lights, false trailer detection, or disabled parking sensors.
• 7‑pin socket corrosion or flimsy mounts creating intermittent connections.
• Aftermarket bars interfering with rear sensors, spare‑wheel clearance, or departure angle.
• Overloading or excessive ball weight—rated up to 3,500 kg braked, but ball weight and GVM/GCM limits still apply.

Get the bar inspected for torque, cracks and alignment, tidy the wiring with sealed connectors, and use a quality weight‑distribution setup if your caravan’s a bit… enthusiastic.
