Ford Ranger vs Toyota HiLux 2023: the Aussie ute grudge match where one brings a new toolkit and the other brings a decade of trusty scars.
Ranger pros: punchy 3.0L V6 diesel (about 184 kW/600 Nm) with a smooth 10-speed and big-screen tech; clever tray touches; strong 3,500 kg towing. Ranger cons: higher prices on popular trims, more complex tech to go wrong, and a jiggle when unladen.
HiLux pros: proven 2.8L diesel (up to 150 kW/500 Nm), vast dealer network, tough rep and resale that barely flinches; genuinely capable off-road. HiLux cons: older cabin tech, a 6-speed auto that feels dated, and a firm ride, with towing broadly similar at 3,500 kg.
Both offer 5-star safety and five-year warranties; choose fresh brains (Ranger) or battle-hardened brawn (HiLux), and no, I'm not picking a winner.
