In Victoria, you can face your child forward from 6 months, but only in an approved restraint with an inbuilt harness—and it’s wiser to keep them rear-facing as long as they fit.
The law in a nutshell: under 6 months must be rear-facing; 6 months to under 4 years rear- or forward-facing with harness; 4 to under 7 years forward-facing with harness or a booster; 7+ can use a booster or the adult belt if it fits properly.
Kids under 4 must sit in the back; ages 4–7 should stay in the back unless those seats are already taken by younger kids, in which case the front is allowed with the correct restraint.
Use an AS/NZS 1754–approved seat, fit the top tether, and ISOFIX is fine if your car has it—no coat-hanger engineering, thanks.
When in doubt, keep them rear-facing longer and get a professional fitment check; your spine prefers science over bravado.
