In Victoria there’s no magic “height” in the road rules for booster seats—the law is age-based. Children aged 4 to under 7 must use an approved booster or forward-facing restraint, and at 7+ they may use a booster or adult seatbelt if it fits properly. Safety bods recommend keeping kids in a booster until they’re about 145 cm tall and they pass the usual five-step fit test, because physics doesn’t care about birthdays. Check belt fit: lap belt low on the hips, shoulder belt on the collarbone, knees bent at the edge of the seat, back against the seat, and no slouching like a teenager in a boring lecture. If in doubt, stick with the booster longer—it’s comfier than an emergency department. For the fine print, consult VicRoads and the seat’s manual.
