Chasing Holden Colorado 3.0 VCDi problems? The RC-era 3.0 (Isuzu 4JJ1) is a tough old unit, but time, towing and neglect can turn even a brick into porridge. Here are the gremlins most owners actually see in Australia, and what to watch for.

• Suction Control Valve (SCV)
• EGR and intake carbon build-up: rough idle, smoke and missing oomph; clean the EGR/manifold and stick to proper service intervals.
• Injectors and sealing washers: diesel knock, fumes or rising oil level; test, recode or replace injectors and fit new seals.
• Boost leaks/turbo actuator: split intercooler hoses or tired vacuum lines causing low boost and black smoke; inspect and replace.
• Clutch/DMF wear or hot autos when towing: shudder, flare or slip; regular fluid services and an auxiliary cooler help.
• Front-end and driveline wear: ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings and rear leaf sag from corrugations; check before you buy.
• Cooling and electrics: lazy thermostats, alternators and dodgy earths; watch temps under load and voltage at idle.

Buy with eyes open and a proper inspection; treated right, these donks rack up big kays without the soap opera.
