holden colorado power steering problems

If your Holden Colorado suddenly steers like a gym workout and squeals like a startled galah, you’re likely staring down power steering gremlins. The usual suspects are boringly familiar: leaks, worn pumps, and belts that have given up on ambition. Here are the common culprits owners run into and what they feel like behind the wheel.

• Fluid leaks from high-pressure hoses or rack seals (low fluid = heavy steering, whining pump).
• Failing power steering pump (groaning/whining, metal shimmer in fluid, intermittent assist).
• Old or contaminated fluid (brown/foamy, inconsistent assist after cold starts).
• Slipping/loose drive belt or lazy tensioner (assist fades, noise under load).
• Rack wear or internal bypass (wandering feel, uneven assist, occasional clunk).

Quick checks: inspect for wet hoses/rack boots, verify fluid level/colour, and eyeball the belt and pulley alignment before throwing parts at it. Most fixes range from modest (fluid flush, hose) to “brace the wallet” (pump or rack rebuild). If the steering goes heavy suddenly, park it—losing assist mid-corner is not a character-building exercise. A decent workshop can pressure-test the system and save you guessing.
