holden cruze alternator problems Page 2

The Cruze alternator has a habit of clocking off early, usually right when you’ve got somewhere important to be. Symptoms range from a glowing battery light to power steering and infotainment going on strike.

• Worn voltage regulator/brushes causing under- or over-charging.
• Seized decoupler (overrun) pulley leading to belt chatter and poor charging at idle.
• Tired belt/tensioner or oil/heat contamination cutting alternator life short.
• Main charge cable/fusible link at the under‑bonnet fuse box corroding or melting, mimicking a dead alternator.
• A weak battery masquerading as an alternator fault—load-test it before blaming the spinny thing.

Diagnosis is simple: you want roughly 13.8–14.6 V at the battery with lights and A/C on; anything else and it’s likely alternator, wiring, or pulley. Expect about AUD $400–$900 fitted for a quality unit or rebuild—cheapies are false economy—so let a good auto sparky confirm before you start throwing parts.
