The famous Holden factory in Melbourne was at Fishermans Bend (Port Melbourne), long-time home to HQ, engines and early assembly before the bulk of car building moved elsewhere.

Melbourne kept the spanners turning on engines and R&D while large-scale assembly shifted to sites like Dandenong and, later, Elizabeth in South Australia.

Port Melbourne’s engine operations wound down before local manufacturing ended nationally in 2017, and the site has since been repurposed.
