holden rodeo 2.8 turbo diesel problems

Looking at a Holden Rodeo 2.8 turbo diesel and wondering what might go bang first? The Isuzu 4JB1‑T is a tough old donk, but age and neglect can still bring drama.

  • Cooling system issues leading to overheating; prolonged heat can blow a head gasket or warp/crack the head.
  • Injection pump and injector wear or seal leaks causing hard starts, rough idle, or fuel seepage.
  • Lazy glow plugs or relays making cold starts smoky and stubborn.
  • Turbocharger oil leaks or shaft play, with blue smoke under load and a whistle gone wild.
  • Timing belt and tensioner overdue—skip the schedule and you’re gambling with valves.
  • Clutch hydraulics weeping, and tired gearbox synchros giving a crunchy 2nd/3rd.
  • Front-end wear (ball joints, wheel bearings) and rust in tray seams or cab mounts on older bodies.

Get a thorough pre‑purchase inspection and keep the cooling system mint. Parts are easy to source in Australia and not wallet‑immolating if you plan ahead.
