Holden Rodeo gearboxes are generally workmanlike, but years of towing, big tyres, and heroic shift technique can make them grumpy.

• Notchy or grinding shifts into 2nd/3rd as synchros wear—worse when cold.
• Input shaft bearing whine that rises with revs in-gear, quiet in neutral clutch-out.
• Popping out of gear under load from worn detents, selector wear, or tired engine/gearbox mounts.
• Clutch hydraulic leaks or air in the system causing poor disengagement and baulky shifts.
• Oil leaks at the rear seal or transfer case (4x4) that get misdiagnosed until the oil level drops and the box protests.
• Autos can overheat when towing without an auxiliary cooler, leading to shudder or harsh shifts.

Use the correct spec oil (often GL‑4 for brass synchros), change it on schedule, and listen for metal in the drain—cheap insurance compared with a rebuild.
