hot water system tripping power Page 25

If your hot water system keeps tripping the power, it’s usually an electrical gremlin rather than your house being haunted.

  • Failed heating element insulation: earth leakage trips the RCD the moment it warms up.
  • Thermostat or wiring fault: short or stuck-on control draws excess current and knocks the breaker.
  • Water ingress: leaks into junction boxes or the element cap cause nuisance trips, especially after rain.
  • Overloaded or tired circuit/RCD: undersized breaker, shared off-peak load, or a dying safety switch.

Isolate the HWS circuit, reset, and if it trips only with the heater on, book a licensed electrician (and plumber if it’s leaking) to test the element and thermostat, then replace the faulty bits.
