James Dean died in a car crash on 30 September 1955 when his Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed “Little Bastard,” collided with another car near Cholame, California.
He and his mechanic were heading to a race when a Ford turned across his path at the junction of what is now State Route 46 and State Route 41.
Dean suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after; he was just 24.
It was a bleak full stop to a meteoric career—tragic, avoidable, and very human beneath all the Hollywood myth-making.
Modern cars and roads are far safer now, so do the sensible thing and arrive in one piece.
