Short answer: you can't get a full NSW VIN check for free—sorry, bureaucracy still wants its coffee money.
Free: use Service NSW's Registration Check to confirm rego status, expiry, make/model and CTP, but that search is plate-based, not VIN.
For the proper VIN history—finance owing, stolen and written-off status—do a PPSR search using the VIN; it's the official one and costs about $2.
Avoid "free VIN check" sites that bait you in and charge more than PPSR. Do the PPSR right before paying for the car so the report is time-stamped and you're covered.
