how does the instant asset write off work

Ah, the Instant Asset Write-Off, Australia's favourite tax trick for small business owners who prefer to keep things simple and their accountants slightly amused. Essentially, it allows eligible businesses to immediately deduct the cost of assets, up to a certain threshold, rather than depreciating them over years. For the 2023-24 financial year, that threshold is a hefty $20,000 AUD per asset, meaning if your new office chair or laptop costs less than that, you can write it off in full right away.

To qualify, your business must have an aggregated turnover under $10 million AUD, and the asset must be used or installed ready for use in your business during the financial year. This means no gaming consoles masquerading as work tools, sorry. It’s a handy way to reduce taxable income swiftly, but remember, this is a federal tax incentive, so check the ATO’s official documentation or have a chat with your accountant to avoid any nasty surprises.
