how long do children need car seats Page 7

In Australia, kids need approved restraints by age, not vibes. Under 6 months: rear-facing only. 6 months to under 4: rear- or forward-facing with inbuilt harness. 4 to under 7: forward-facing with harness or a booster with a properly fitted seatbelt. 7 years and up: may use an adult seatbelt if it fits correctly, but a booster is wise until they pass the 5‑step test or are about 145 cm tall.

Generally, under‑4s must ride in the back; 4–7s can use the front only if the rear is full of younger kids or the vehicle has no back seat. Fit the seat tightly, keep harnesses snug, and skip the puffer‑jacket marshmallow look—coats off in the car. Laws vary slightly by state and vehicle, so check your local road authority for the fine print.
