In Western Australia, the demerit points system is designed to keep the roads safe by punishing bad behaviour. For most drivers, you start out with 12 points over a three-year period. If you rack up 12 points, you get a driving suspension, usually for three months. Learner and provisional drivers aren't so lucky—they only get 4 points before facing penalties.
