Without a logbook, you can claim up to 5,000 business kilometres per car per income year using the cents-per-kilometre method.
Keep notes of how you worked out the business trips—diary entries, calendars, job sheets—because “trust me, mate” doesn’t fly at tax time.
If you clock more than 5,000 km, you’ll need the logbook method to go higher, with proper records of business use.
Rates change each year, so check the current ATO cents-per-kilometre rate before dreaming about a refund big enough for a new set of tyres.
