A roadworthy inspection in Australia doesn’t cost the earth, but it isn’t a sausage sizzle either. As a rule of thumb: Victoria about AUD $150–$300 (set by the tester), Queensland around AUD $90–$100 for a Safety Certificate, and NSW’s eSafety “pink slip” check roughly AUD $40–$50.
Big 4WDs, imports, or mobile inspections can bump that up, and if it fails you’ll pay for repairs plus a re‑inspection fee. Whether the car is fresh or gloriously used, the inspection fee is similar—the used bit just means you’re more likely to need one for a sale.
Certificates have short validity windows, so don’t get one weeks before you’re ready to sell. Call a local licensed tester or check your state transport site for exact figures, then budget a little extra for the inevitable “while we’re there” fixes.
