In Queensland, transferring rego hits you twice: a flat transfer fee (about $31–$35) and vehicle registration duty based on the car’s value and engine type.
As a rule of thumb, duty is roughly $2 per $100 for 1–4 cylinders, hybrids or EVs; $3 per $100 for 5–6 cylinders; and $4 per $100 for 7+ cylinders—calculated on the purchase price or market value.
So a $10,000 four-cylinder runabout would be about $200 in duty plus the transfer fee, while a burly V8 will sting more.
Lodge the transfer within 14 days or risk extra charges, and you can usually sort it online via your TMR account.
Budget a bit extra if you need a safety certificate, personalised plate transfer, or other admin frills—because paperwork never travels alone.
