In Victoria you “cancel registration” with VicRoads—less dramatic than it sounds, unless you’ve named the car—then hand back the number plates.
Do it via your myVicRoads account or at a service centre, bring ID and the plates (or a police report if they’re lost), and submit the cancellation request for that vehicle.
Expect a pro‑rata refund of any remaining rego/TAC insurance minus a small fee, paid to the registered operator; cancel your direct debit while you’re feeling organised.
Once cancelled, the car can’t be driven on public roads (obviously), and if it’s been sold interstate, written‑off, or wrecked, have evidence ready so the paperwork doesn’t sulk.
Remove your e‑tag and update toll accounts unless you enjoy paying for a stranger’s Macca’s runs down the Monash.
