In Queensland it’s called a Safety Certificate (RWC): book an inspection with an Approved Inspection Station (AIS) or a mobile inspector, and bring ID, rego details, and the vehicle. Give the car a pre-check—lights, tyres, brakes, windscreen, wipers, seatbelts, leaks—so you’re not donating money to the re-test fairy. Typical fees are set by the station (not the government) and commonly sit around AUD $90–$120 for cars and less for bikes. For private sellers the certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km (whichever comes first); dealers get 3 months or 1,000 km. You must have one to sell or transfer a registered light vehicle or to re-register, and you’re meant to display it if you advertise the car for sale in public. Exemptions include selling it unregistered, off to a wrecker, or heavy vehicles that need a COI instead. Rules can change—check Queensland Transport’s latest guidance before you book.
