Put down a small deposit (card or EFT) to lock the car in, and get a proper receipt with the VIN and drive‑away price—no mystery maths. Most dealers prefer the balance by EFT or a bank cheque on delivery; ring the dealership to confirm account details and dodge any scammy look‑alikes. Credit cards are usually fine for deposits but often capped and slapped with fees; turning up with a duffel of cash will only make AUSTRAC very interested in your weekend plans. If you’re financing, arrive with pre‑approval so you can compare the dealer’s offer without the pressure-cooker sales pitch. Before paying the lot, confirm the contract lists every cost (stamp duty, rego, delivery) and bin the fluff you don’t want (etching, nitrogen, mystery paint potions). Lastly, collect a tax invoice and only hand over the funds when you’ve sighted the car you’re actually taking home.
