Importing a car from the USA to Australia is doable, but it’s not exactly a Sunday drive. First, confirm the vehicle’s eligibility and secure a federal import approval via the government’s ROVER system before it leaves port. You’ll need shipping, marine insurance, thorough cleaning (no soil), and proof it’s asbestos-free—customs and biosecurity take that very seriously. At arrival, budget for port charges, customs clearance, GST (10%), and possibly duty and Luxury Car Tax depending on the vehicle’s value and classification. After that, the car must meet Australian Design Rules and state requirements; left‑hand‑drive vehicles usually need conversion unless they qualify as older/classic under local schemes. All up, expect several extra thousands on top of the purchase and freight, and consider a reputable import broker to save headaches and, frankly, your sanity.
