Thinking of cranking up your tow rating? Short answer: in Australia you generally cannot legally increase the manufacturer’s maximum braked towing capacity after first registration.
Some models can get a higher rating via an approved second-stage manufacturer upgrade done before first rego; after that, you’re mostly limited to GVM upgrades, suspension/brake improvements, and better tow hardware—but the stamped tow limit stays the same.
If you’re chasing stability and margin, look at a quality towbar matched to the vehicle’s rating, an electric brake controller, a suitable weight-distribution hitch, and load-levelling suspension.
Whatever you fit, keep GVM, axle loads and GCM within spec, and have any mods engineered and signed off by your state authority before towing.
Check the owner’s manual, compliance plate and any mod plate—then get proper engineering advice, because insurers and roadside inspectors don’t do “close enough”.
