is brisbane more expensive than melbourne Page 2

Short answer: it depends what you’re paying for.

As of 2025, Brisbane’s housing costs—rents and median dwelling prices—often sit above Melbourne’s, so renters can feel the pinch sooner. Day-to-day costs like groceries, utilities and rego are broadly similar, while Melbourne can sting more for parking, dining in the CBD and certain services. Wages and choice tend to skew Melbourne’s way, which can soften the blow there. So: if accommodation is the big line item, Brisbane may feel more expensive; if you already own or share, Melbourne’s extras can add up.
