Driving in thongs (flip-flops) in Victoria is not outright illegal, but it's about as sensible as juggling chainsaws blindfolded. The law requires drivers to have proper control of their vehicle, and if wearing thongs compromises that, you could find yourself in hot water. In practice, police might issue a fine if your choice of footwear leads to unsafe driving or an accident.
So, while thongs won't get you a ticket just for wearing them, they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot behind the wheel. Best stick to proper shoes with a firm grip for your own safety and sanity. For more info, check out resources on ServiceCentral or local VicRoads guidelines.
