Victoria sticks to clear age-and-size rules, because small humans can’t be trusted to stay put. From birth to under 6 months: an approved rearward-facing restraint. From 6 months to under 4 years: approved rearward- or forward-facing restraint with an inbuilt harness, and no front seat if the car has more than one row. From 4 to under 7 years: a forward-facing restraint with harness or a booster with a properly adjusted seatbelt; front seat only if all rear seats are occupied by younger kids. At 7 and over, an adult seatbelt is allowed if it fits correctly—otherwise keep them in a booster until they meet the seat’s height markers and pass the common-sense fit checks. All restraints must meet AS/NZS 1754 and be correctly anchored; if in doubt, get a professional fitment check via VicRoads-approved services.
