“Land Down Under” is the nickname for Australia because it sits in the Southern Hemisphere—down south of most of the world’s population and maps.

The phrase went global thanks to an early-’80s pop hit, but variations were around long before radio did the heavy lifting.

It’s shorthand for the wide brown land of beaches, bush, and fauna that hops, swims, or occasionally nips.

So yes, the Land Down Under is Australia; pack sunscreen, a hat, and an appetite for kilometres of nothing followed by a meat pie.
