Despite the “Victoria” tag, Luxury Car Tax (LCT) is a federal tax and works the same Australia‑wide. For 2024–25 the thresholds are about $80,567 for most cars and $91,387 for fuel‑efficient ones (combined ≤ 7.0 L/100 km). If the GST‑inclusive car value (including most dealer‑fitted accessories, excluding stamp duty/rego/CTP) exceeds the threshold, you pay 33% on the portion above it. It generally applies when a GST‑registered dealer sells the car or it’s imported; private‑to‑private sales usually don’t attract LCT. In Victoria you’ll still cop state stamp duty on top, so brace yourself before the drive‑away number lands.
