The Mazda Bravo (a twin to the Ford Courier/B-Series) can develop a few gearbox niggles as kilometres pile on, especially on utes that have towed or lived off-road. Most gripes come down to worn synchros, tired bearings, or a clutch hydraulic issue masquerading as a “bad box”. Start with the basics: correct GL-4 spec oil (not GL-5), refresh the shifter bush, and bleed/inspect the clutch master and slave before blaming the gears. If it still crunches, pops out of gear, or howls under load, you’re in rebuild territory—budget for bearings and synchros and find a transmission specialist who knows these units. The good news: looked after, they’re tough as old boots; neglected, they’re a pig.
