mazda cx 5 2023 review Page 2

The 2023 Mazda CX‑5 is the class overachiever that makes most rivals feel like they’re wearing trackies to a job interview. The 2.0L is fine for suburbs, the 2.5L is the sweet spot, the 2.5 turbo is properly punchy, and the diesel sips fuel like it’s paying for it—paired to a smooth 6‑speed auto that’s old-school but decisive. Ride and handling are tidy and composed, cabin quality feels premium, and the infotainment is sensible rather than flashy—like a well-ironed shirt that actually fits. Safety is top-shelf with a 5‑star ANCAP rating and a full suite of driver assists. Real-world economy sits roughly in the mid‑7s L/100km for the 2.5 petrol, mid‑8s if you enjoy the turbo, and mid‑5s for the diesel. Boot space is decent rather than giant, but family duty is a doddle and towing up to 2,000 kg braked is on the cards. In short, it’s the dependable all-rounder that makes you wonder why you ever considered a fashion SUV.
